About Thai Food and The Bakehouse

Thai food is all in one, fire and freshness, zest and bite, a subtle combination of flavours from sweet to mellow, spicy to sweet. There is atmosphere and a sense of beauty but above all there is the sharing of the dishes.

Rice is the centre piece of a Thai meal and is eaten with a number of dishes, which may include soup, curries, fried, steamed or grilled meat, fish or poultry.

Every dish will include a diversity of flavours such as hot, mild, bitter, sweet and sour. While traditionally fingers were used to eat with, today’s diners use a spoon and fork. Our aim is to serve authentic Thai dishes prepared to order.

Husband and wife team Chris and Aunchna Walker welcome you to The Bakehouse, one of the region’s first Thai restaurants.

By day Tea Guild Award Winner, The Bakehouse is a popular coffee shop from 10am to 3pm Tuesday to Saturday.

Friday and Saturday nights The Bakehouse transforms into a Thai Restaurant from 7pm, where Aunchna prepares and cooks all the food herself.

The extensive menu offers a wide choice for vegetarians. Aunchna strives to keep her recipes authentic, whilst featuring locally sourced ingredients wherever appropriate.

There’s a traditional lunch menu featuring sausage and mash, cottage pie and salads, as well as a Thai menu and a sandwich menu. Again, everything is made to order.

Most impressive is the extensive selection of homemade cakes and puddings – proving the bakery from which the building takes its name is still very much part of the business.

The whole place has a fantastic ambiance, including the courtyard garden, which is used as much as possible - subject to there being no monsoons!
